A central underground sewage system was being sorely missed in the otherwise salubrious ambience of the Armed Forces Officers Cooperative Housing Society (AFOCHS), Sainikpuri.
The colony has been in existence for the last 52 years as a registered society and has even won the best colony award from the GHMC last year without a sewer! Spread over 150 acres, it has more than 460 dwellings with each having its own septic tank.
The colony residents and the office bearers of the society have been discussing about having underground sewer lines for the last few years and when the GHMC offer came, they decided not to waste much time.
Sometime last year, GHMC Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu during his several visits to the colonies in the suburbs having inadequate basic amenities like drinking water pipelines, sewerage and so on, had offered to ground the works provided the residential welfare associations too come forward to bear part of the cost.
AFOCHS had put up the proposal and has agreed to bear part of the cost of the project which comes to about Rs. 97 lakh.
Accompanied by Uppal MLA B. Raji Reddy, Colony Secretary Col R. Bhaskar, and others met the Commissioner few days ago to hand over a cheque of Rs. 60 lakh as the first instalment for the project.
Mr. Krishna Babu instructed the Chief Engineer to immediately to go for tenders and also to ground the works so that is completed by January 2014.
