Joint managing director of the Apollo Hospitals Group Sangita Reddy was conferred a honorary doctorate of business by the Macquarie University of Sydney, Australia at an impressive convocation ceremony here on Thursday.
The honorary doctorate was conferred by university president and Vice-Chancellor S. Bruce Dowton in the presence of her father and chairman Apollo Hospitals Pratap C. Reddy, her husband and MP, Konda Visveswar Reddy and Member of the Rajya Sabha, T. Subbarami Reddy.
Prof. Dowton gave an overview of the Macquarie University and how it was not just a ‘brick and mortar’ varsity but one that was committed to ethos of being the leader in imparting quality education.
He said that 1,80,000 students from 140 countries had graduated from the university.
University’s executive dean Patrick McNeal read out the citation and presented her to the Vice-Chancellor, who then gave away the honorary degree. Dr. Sangita Reddy took a bow and looking towards her father, she recalled how she always wanted to become a doctor and how her father did not allow her to take the medical seat.
Cascading affect
Earlier, Dr. Pratap Reddy said two-thirds of deaths in the world were due to non-communicable diseases. The cascading effect was the loss of productivity, apart from increasing costs, he said, adding that hence the need for innovative models of affordable healthcare delivery to be developed.
Later, a strategic collaboration between Apollo Hospitals and Macquarie University was signed, paving the way for a Doctorate in Medicine (MD in Global Medicine) to be offered.
