The Nehru Zoological Park got a new attraction on Friday when zoo officials released three-month-old white tiger cubs into the display enclosure for the first time.

“The tiger cubs were born on April 22. We waited for nearly three months and today is the first day they are released into the enclosure,” said a zoo official. Visitors could spot the two tiger cubs named Anand and Anita as they played around with their mother Sameera.

The white tiger enclosure is double layered with full netting in the main enclosure separated by a 6-ft-high chicken wire mesh with an additional barrier of bamboo shrubs limiting the visibility, but it has a near-natural habitat for the wild animals.

On the first day, the tiger cubs stayed put in the rear part of the enclosure closer to their mother. “We are observing how the cubs adapt to humans who can come very close to them owing to the nature of the enclosure. For these three months, they have been at the night house and they seem to be doing well now,” said a zoo official.

The white tiger is a variant of Bengal Tiger due to pigmentation difference and is considered a sub-species.
