Annie D.Raja, general secretary, National Federation of Indian Women, danced briefly with students of Annie Besant Women’s College at its 19 annual day celebrations here on Monday.

Addressing the students later, she said that she had joined them to assert her right to dance. “I came from a place (Kerala) where women are not supposed to dance,” she observed and elaborated that it was the case especially when a woman was in public service or in politics. She said that after a Left movement leader danced “naatu paatu”, she was attacked for a month by the entire media in Kerala.

“I danced to protest such an attitude that women shouldn’t dance,” she added.
