Here is the opportunity for a normal person to learn Braille script. A 45-day course ‘Braille for All’, will soon help them in learning the nuances of the script.
A Non Governmental Organtisation (NGO) Bala Memorial Charitable Trust will begin the course in mid-February, and run it in 30 centres across the city.
Sharing the details at the valedictory meeting of the month-long celebrations of 204 Birthday of Louis Braille here on Thursday, founder-chairman of the trust M. Gangaram (Ph: 9989900078) said that offering the course to outsiders would help address the difficulty of shortage of books in Braille script for the visually challenged.
It would also go a long way in bridging the gap between them and normal persons.
Magazine planned
Gangaram also revealed plans to bring out a monthly magazine in Braille script, with education and development-related reports for the visually challenged.
The magazine, which was formally announced on Thursday, would help the 25,000-odd literate people among the community, he hoped.
“There is no magazine in the Braille script anywhere in the State, and this is a welcome decision. Earlier, there was one quarterly magazine by the name ‘Sphoorthy’, but it was later closed down.
We brought out one edition of the newsletter ‘Chandrayan’ in Braille script, but could not sustain it as it required help from outsiders,” said N. Raghunandan Kumar from Planetary Society of India, who is one among the trustees. Eminent persons from the visually challenged community were felicitated as part of the event.
