After being convicted of murdering his wife by a US court, Muddamalle Amit Livingston fled to Hyderabad, where he secured a driving license and PAN card in the name of Sanjay Kumar.
He even got a bike registered on that name using documents fraudulently obtained, officers probing the case told The Hindu on Saturday.
“How he managed to secure a driving license and PAN card [despite] being a fugitive is yet to be confirmed. He must have presented forged papers,” they said.
When police raided the penthouse of an apartment building in Madhavapuri Colony of Sainikpuri, Amit tried to escape. Occupants of other flats in the building told investigators that he rarely interacted with them. He wouldn’t come out or mingle with other families, and was mostly quiet, they said.
No passport was found in the penthouse.
“Apparently, he had flown into India on a fake passport since he was already convicted in America on a murder charge. He must have destroyed it so as not to leave evidence of his illegal journey,” the police said.
He had been living in the rented penthouse for over three years. “He was not answering our questions and said ‘I don’t remember’ when we tried to ascertain if he directly came to Hyderabad from the US,” the investigators maintained.
Amit was working with a medical transcription company located in a commercial complex near Paradise Hotel in Secunderabad. He would go to office now and then, but mostly preferred to work from home, police said. He had also opened an account with a private bank. Born in Hyderabad, Amit’s family lived in Chikkadpally before his doctor-father decided to migrate to the US. He was educated, and worked as medical transcriptionist, in the US. He came to India in 2007.
