The prestigious Hyderabad Traffic Integrated Management System (HTRIMS) launched amid much fanfare on August 18 has failed to take-off.
While the authorities were confident that HTRIMS will be installed in 50 junctions by September 30, to coincide with the Conference of Parties (CoP-11) on Biodiversity, till date not a single junction in the city has been upgraded with this system.
According to the agreement, signed between the city police, GHMC and Bharat Electronics (BEL), BEL has to install HTRIMS in about 90 junctions within 140 days, about four-and-a-half months, from the date of signing the agreement.
It also has to install HTRIMS in a total of 221 junctions in the city within a year.
“We were hopeful that HTRIMS could be installed in at least 30 junctions before CoP-11 event starts. But we have realised that the project is quite complicated. We have completed the survey of all junctions and gave our requirements to the BEL team, which is currently procuring the necessary equipment,” Additional CP (Traffic) C.V. Anand said.
For the project to be successful there is a need to develop supporting infrastructure such as pedestrian islands and proper markings, Mr. Anand said. “We are constantly coordinating with all the concerned departments and are holding review meetings regularly. Though we could not achieve the target of installing new signal system in 50 junctions before CoP-11, the project will be completed in time,” he said, adding that the Jubilee Hills Check Post Junction will be developed as a model HTRIMS junction within two weeks.
