The condition of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi, who was shot at on Saturday, remained critical on Sunday, as doctors operated on him for injuries to some vital organs.
Vital signs stable
The MLA withstood the surgery well and the vital signs were stable, a post-surgery medical bulletin issued by Care Hospital's Banjara Hills branch said.
He continued to be on dialysis, for decrease in urinary function, and on ventilator support. Mr. Owaisi suffered injuries on his left kidney, the upper portion of the large intestine, the urinary bladder and the left hand when bullets were fired and when he was later attacked with knives.
VIPs call
Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy and others visited the hospital and called on his elder brother and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who was at the hospital, monitoring the situation.
Emotional supporters
The MLA's supporters continued to throng the hospital and became emotional, raising slogans for his speedy recovery.
“Stringent action would be initiated against the persons involved in the attack,” the Home Minister said after reviewing the progress of the investigation into the case with police officials.
The police had a tough time making arrangements for the visits of the VIPs, which slowed down traffic movement on Road no.1 of Banjara Hills.
Old city peaceful
The old city remained peaceful and security was tightened at important junctions to check possible retaliation by MIM workers.
Armed police pickets were posted near the residences of Mohammed Bin Omar Yafai alias Mohammed Pahelwan, who has emerged as the prime suspect in the attack.
Pahelwan was detained by the police hours after the attack but he denied involvement.
Slain assailant buried
Meanwhile, the body of the slain ‘assailant' Ibrahim Yafai, son of Pahelwan's brother, was buried amid high-security arrangements near Masjid-e-Omar in Barkas.
The autopsy was performed late on Saturday night. The police tried to persuade his family members to perform the last rites before the early hours of Sunday, concerned that the funeral procession during daytime could trigger clashes. Finally, the burial was completed a little after the Fajr prayers on Sunday morning.
The condition of Ibrahim Yafai's elder brother, Awad Yafai, who suffered a bullet wound on his chest in the shoot-out, was critical. He is undergoing treatment at Yashoda Hospital in Malakpet.
