July 12, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - HYDERABAD:

A record 20,000 entries are expected for the sixth edition of the Airtel Hyderabad Marathon, organised by Hyderabad Runners Society, to be held here on August 28, according to Murali Nannapaneni, Race Director.

Mr. Murali informed mediapersons here that the marathon which had become synonymous in branding Hyderabad as it is also part of the Telangana State Government’s initiative of ‘Happening Hyderabad’ will be different from the previous editions in terms of taking measures to provide top class medical facilities with an eye on safety and also route entertainment to provide the necessary impetus.

“We are glad that Airtel continues its partnership and but for whom this event would not have been such a big success given the participation from a cross section of the society not just from the Twin Cities but also from across the country. Many foreign athletes, especially from Africa, are expected to be here,” Mr. Murali explained.

The event will feature a full marathon of 42 km from People’s Plaza on the Necklace Road on August 28 and the half-marathon (21 km) from Hi-Tex Grounds in Madhapur besides the 5k Fun Run the previous day to build the right kind of momentum as in all 3,500 volunteer-force will be in place to ensure a smooth conduct of the Runs, the Race Director pointed out. Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, IT Secretary to State Government, reminded that the Hyderabad Marathon is different from other 10 Cities which also host similar events given the fact that it is organised by those connected with Hyderabad Runners.
