Air passenger held for smuggling gold

The customs officials on Sunday morning arrested an air passenger for allegedly smuggling a gold bar weighing one kg from Dubai at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad.

Based on intelligence inputs, the customs air intelligence unit intercepted a passenger identified as P. Siraju of Kannur in Kerala while he was passing through with a handbag. He arrived at the RGIA from Dubai in Emirates Airlines flight EK-524. When officials questioned him about the possession of any dutiable or prohibited goods, the passenger denied and replied in negative.

After examining his bag, the officers frisked him and found one kg gold bar deftly concealed in the socks worn on his left leg. The value of the gold bar seized from the passenger is Rs.29 lakh. After being interrogated, he admitted to the offence.
