Osmania General Hospital (OGH) authorities have requested the government for a third generator, in addition to its existing two, to tide over the power cuts during the summer season. The development comes in the light of the hospital suffering a major blackout earlier this week, sending the doctors and patients into a tizzy.
ICUs affectedEven as the power went off, officials struggled to find the exact source of problem, while several wards – including ICUs and patient recovering wards, as well as outpatient blocks – were plunged into darkness. The hospital authorities were left stumped as there were no scheduled power cuts.
The two back-up generators were running overtime to ensure power was supplied to vital wings like the ICU and casualty.
Close to 1,400 litres of diesel was acquired to make the generators work for at least six hours.
Initially, most people suspected a short-circuit due to leakage from old drain pipes from an underground cable.
By Tuesday night, electricians had identified a malfunctioning transformer as the reason behind power cuts, but its repair was delayed as the works were to be taken up only by the contractors hired by the A.P Health and Medical Infrastructure Development Corporation (APHMIDC).
Power was restored after repairing the transformer.
“We have approached power officials to provide direct supply to our vital wings to avoid such situations the future,” said hospital Superintendent C. G. Raghuram.
