A nine-year-old boy, who lost sight in one of his eyes after his teacher punished him, is able to see again, thanks to a surgical intervention at the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital here.

Fardeen Ahmed of Moghalpura was unable to see in his left eye after he was punished by his Arabic teacher Jabbar for having failed to do his homework.

There was considerable commotion following the incident, which happened on February 11, with demonstrators demanding justice for the boy outside the school.

Lok Ayukta intervenes

The child was referred to the S.D. Eye Hospital after the Lok Ayukta intervened. Eye surgeons performed the corrective procedure on March 22 and discharged the Fardeen after five days of post-operative recovery.

He had returned to the hospital for a review on Friday.

“The child had no vision when he was admitted. Our surgeons took up the surgery. He has recovered his vision fully now,” said P. V. Nanda Kumar Reddy, Superintendent, S.D. Eye Hospital.

“He was only able to sense some vague light and had no clear vision. Latest tests done today have revealed that his eyesight is normal,” Dr. Nanda Kumar added.
