The State government has made a case to the Union Home Secretary, Anil Goswamy, for sanction of additional battalions of Andhra Pradesh Special Police. He arrived here on Tuesday to take stock of the government’s preparedness for establishing two States and governments by June 2, the appointed day.
Mr. Goswamy held a meeting with Chief Secretary P.K. Mohanty, Director General of Police Prasada Rao, Principal Secretary, Home, T.P. Das and senior police officials at the Secretariat here on Wednesday to discuss the assistance required from the Centre for establishing institutions like Greyhounds, Octopus and training centres in the residuary Andhra Pradesh.
Mr. Das made a presentation regarding police structure and implications due to fallout of division. A discussion was also held about the distribution of All India Services officers between the two successor States. The IAS, IPS and IFS officers represented that they be given option to choose either of the State. However, Mr. Goswamy apparently said that the Department of Personnel and Training would have to take a decision.
Mr. Goswamy expressed his satisfaction over the progress made on State bifurcation work so far and said that he was happy with the composition of various teams with Andhra, Telangana and outside officers.
Earlier on Tuesday, Mr. Goswamy, accompanied by Joint Secretary Suresh Kumar and Special Secretary Rajeev Sharma during a meeting with Chief Secretary and several committees, apparently advised every officer involved in the bifurcation work to be considerate and humane to do justice to both the regions.
Mr. Mohanty made a presentation on the progress on bifurcation work that commenced on March 4, work assigned to each of the 19 committees and the road map given to them to complete the given mandate within the set timelines.
He, according to sources, said the State government proposed to complete the bifurcation work and give all the information and data required by the Union government by April-end. The meeting also discussed the likely difficulties to be encountered.
Asked about delay in division of assets related to public sector units, Mr. Goswamy said the A.P. Reorganisation Act was clear about what to be completed by the appointed day and what could be done subsequently.
