The Cyberabad police on Saturday confirmed that the cleric, who was arrested a few days ago on charges of stabbing a person at Khajaguda, was an associate of Mumbai gangster Chota Shakeel.

The police said Qualeem Isam Sharif alias Abdul Kaber (35) was a native of Mumbai. He was absconding after the Mumbai police booked a case against him for his alleged involvement in a rioting case under the limits of Andheri police station in 2010. He later came to the city and stayed in a rented house at Zirra here and worked as a labourer. A few months later, he came to Khajaguda and has since been staying in a religious place.

On November 1 he fought with one Akram over a trivial issue and attacked him with a knife resulting in injuries. Residents rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors discharged him later. The police immediately took Kaber into custody.

During questioning, Kaber told police that he was as an associate of Chota Shakeel and came to the city after the Andheri police launched a hunt against him for his involvement in a case. At present, Kaber is lodged in Cherlapally prison. Raidurgam Inspector A. Bala Koti said, “We have already informed to the Mumbai police about Kaber’s arrest.”
