Sugarcane juice stalls are dime a dozen across the city but a few are creating waves.
The eco-friendly manually operated juice extraction machines have become a hit with consumers because of the clean and healthy juice they provide.
The cane juice extractors made of wood are brought from Maharashtra and doing brisk business in different parts of the city. They are hand operated and not dependent on diesel or electricity to run.
Fuel saver
All the parts of the machine, including the grinders, are made of wood decreasing the risk of rust or oil mixing with the juice. “Not only do we save fuel but also provide a healthy juice,” Bapaji, a stall owner at Chandrayangutta says.
A glass of the sugarcane juice is sold for Rs. 10 against the price of Rs. 8 sold by vendors who extract it on diesel or electricity run machines.
Just what they want
“We charge two rupees more for the hard work we put in and quality of the juice,” his colleague Aashish says.
At the end of the day, the vendors sell anywhere between 100 and 120 glasses of juice a day and share the income between themselves. Mohammed Ishaq, a resident of Hafeez Babanagar, prefers it over the juice extracted through machine operated grinders. “I take it for my mother as it is extracted using wooden grinders. There is no risk of diesel or grease or oil falling in the juice,” Mr. Ishaq reveals.
