Over 60 underprivileged children take part in a friendly sports event along with their counterparts from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School, Jubilee Hills

More than 60 underprivileged children from seven slums, most of them from Guru Brahma Nagar near Journalists Colony in Jubilee Hills, had their day out on Friday, when they participated in a friendly sports event along with their counterparts from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan School, Jubilee Hills, on the school’s premises.

The events, conducted as part of Project Gubbare on behalf of the school, included a cricket match between the teams, a kho-kho match, volleyball and throw-ball games, and closed with a victory lap across the school ground by all the children.

Project Gubbare is aimed at mainstreaming the children from underprivileged backgrounds, by giving them the right kind of experience and exposure, informed Namitha K, a Class XII student who initially conceived the project. Now the project is being conducted by the school, as an extension of its academic activities.

As part of the project, students from the school are constantly in touch with the children from the adopted slum, and help them with their academics and other activities. “First time when we visited the slum, the children wanted us to help them with their studies. We visit them thrice every week and train them in various subjects. We have also written to the GHMC for toilets, as the slum does not have toilets,” said Namitha.

Friday’s event was supported by NGO Divya Disha.
