Gold medals aren’t really made of gold. They are made of sweat, determination and a hard-to-find alloy called guts. So, if you have the nerve and fortitude grab the opportunity being offered by the GHMC to hone your skills. Who knows you could be a Sachin Tendulkar or a Sania Mirza in the making.

A great opportunity awaits boys and girls to play the game of their choice in the annual summer coaching camps conducted by the GHMC. The coaching camp of the Central zone commenced on Thursday with much fanfare.

There are 55 disciplines to choose from, one more than the last year. The new sport introduced this time is mini football. From April 25 to May 31 the coaching camps will be conducted in all the five GHMC zones.

As many as 2,400 coaches, including Olympians, national and international players will train boys and girls in the age group of 6 to 18 years in different disciplines such as basket ball, boxing, cricket, carom, chess, football, fencing, gymnastic, hockey, judo, karate, kabaddi, table tennis, roller-skating, volley ball, shuttle badminton, sepak thakraw, weight-lifting, wrestling, yoga.

Competitions

All the sports will be conducted from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The inter summer camps competitions will be organised from May 13 onwards.

Mayor, Majid Hussain, who declared open the summer coaching camp at Victory Playground, stressed the importance of self defence training particularly for women. Referring to the danger the fair sex are exposed to these days, Mr. Hussain felt learning karate, judo and boxing skills would empower them.

GHMC Commissioner, M.T. Krishna Babu, said the idea behind conducting the summer camps was to inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship and moulding the character of the children. Last year 1,26,540 boys and 37,083 girls took part in the summer camps, Mr. Krishna Babu said and thanked the coaches for offering their services to train the children.

Deputy Mayor, G. Raj Kumar, also spoke.

The summer coaching camps of South Zone will be inaugurated on April 26 at Quli Qutb Shah Stadium, East Zone on April 27 at Uppal stadium, North zone on April 29 at Marredpally playground and West zone on April 30 at PJR Chandanagar Sports Complex stadium.

Earlier, children from different sporting clubs in the city presented a smart march past.

Unfortunately they had to stay put in the hot sun for a long time as the programme started behind schedule.
