A picture is worth a thousand words goes the saying and there is no disputing that. To prove it year after year, the government departments, including the Information and Public Relations Department, and different associations of photographers organise competitions around August 19.
This year, the Telangana State Photo Journalists’ Association (TSPJA) organised a State-level competition and gave away awards on Wednesday.
The Speaker of Telangana Legislative Assembly, S. Madhusudhana Chary, who gave away the awards, said it was well known that the living condition of photographers, who often risked their lives while discharging their duty, needed to be improved. The government would always support their cause, he assured.
The first, second and third prizes went to M. Ramesh of the Telugu daily Eenadu working here, P. Sridhar of Andhra Jyothi in Jagityal and Dasarath Rajuva of Sakshi in Kothagudem, respectively, which carried cash prizes of ₹10,000, ₹5,000 and ₹3,000 respectively. Also, 15 photographers received consolation prizes with a cash award of ₹1,000 each.
Secretary-General of the Indian Journalists’ Union, Devulapalli Amar, and General Secretary, Telangana Union of Working Journalists, Virahat Ali, also spoke. They said such awards would spur photographers to do better every day and come up with good photographs for their media houses.
The judges included senior journalist Dilip Reddy and professors V. Sathi Reddy (Telugu University) and S.K. Rehman (Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, College of Fine Arts).
Also present were President and General Secretary of TSPJA, Anumalla Gangadhar and K.N. Hari.
