How about celebrating Gandhi Jayanti this year under the stars? Concerned citizens plan to observe the Mahatma’s birthday by spending the night with the homeless with whom the father of the nation associated himself.
Aman Biradari, an activist of campaign for peace, justice, secularism and humanism, has extended invitation to persons who want to spend the night of October 1 and 2 in the open parks, pavements, bus stations and railway platforms to express solidarity with the men, women and children who routinely sleep there.
“The idea is to tell society that the homeless are also human and have rights just like other citizens,” said A.V. Ambika, convenor, Campaign for Citizens’ Shelters network and Major Qaudri of Help Hyderabad.
They told presspersons here on Saturday that said the programme would start from Secunderabad Clock Tower at 7 p.m. on October 1 and culminate at the Nampally railway station between 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. the next day. Eminent persons will speak to sensitise civil society on the homeless issue. Theatre groups will give performances based on the issue. Groups of 25 to 30 persons will also visit children homes run by Balyamitra.
A documentary film and interactive fun and music programme is also lined up.
