Nearly a fifth of urban men and women are diabetic, a new study from National Institute of Nutrition has found.

The Report on Diet and Nutritional Status, which is set to be released by the institute on Tuesday, is based on the data from 16 states that was obtained through Nutrition Monitoring Bureau during 2015-16.

The study found that 22 % of urban men and 19 % women were found to be diabetic. Researchers associated it with prevalence of obesity. Amongst all the States surveyed, Puducherry reported the highest rate of diabetes.

Nutritional status

The data on hypertension shows that 31 % of men and 26 % of women have hypertension. The state of Kerala was found to have the highest rate among all the states.

As under-nutrition is often blamed for lower health indicators in the country, researchers also obtained data on nutritional status from the 1.7 lakh odd subjects who were surveyed.

They found that intake of all nutrients in the studied population is lower than recommendations of Indian Council of Medical Research.

More alarmingly, in the most vulnerable age groups of 1-3 years and 4-6 years, just about 56 % and 68 % respectively reported consuming adequate protein and calorie. A similar finding was made for pregnant women.
