Chairman of Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) S. Satyanarayana and Managing Director G.V. Ramana Rao on Wednesday said that improved work practices among a committed workforce could increase productivity and consequently, more revenues.

They were addressing employees including mechanics, supervisors and officers at a function held by Ashok Leyland to mark the distribution of ‘high mileage’ awards to personnel who maintained 808 buses across all the 11 regions of the corporation.

Silent workers

They recalled that while drivers and conductors represented the public face of the TSRTC, it was those in the depots who silently kept the buses in good shape.

The bus and truck manufacturer was represented at the function by its vice-president Jalaj Gupta and Regional Manager N. Divakar Reddy. Mr. Ramana Rao said that 135 buses had achieved the targeted life in the financial 2016-17, representing a savings of ₹ 1.28 crore in complete overhaul costs, that works out to ₹ 95,253 lakh per bus. The awards were pending for the past four years.

Statistics revealed that while the targeted life of an engine was 10 lakh km, achievement in 2016-17 was 8.67 lakh km while that of the gear box was 7.77 lakh km against a target of 11 lakh km. For the front and rear axles, whose targets fixed by Leyland were 13 lakh km, the achievement was listed at 15.51 lakh km and 15.18 lakh km, respectively.

As each of the staff responsible for maintenance of the juggernauts walked up to the dais to receive the awards for the buses, the applause was thunderous, adding to the pride on the faces of the personnel. Of the 808 buses that were found eligible for the awards, 144 were from Karimnagar region, while Khammam came second with 111 buses, followed by Nalgonda with 109 vehicles.
