Two get 3-day jail for eve-teasing on New Year’s eve

January 05, 2017 12:49 am | Updated 12:49 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Technology has come a long way and often helps in speeding up cumbersome paperwork. And one example of that was the conviction of two men who were awarded a three-day imprisonment by a local court for eve-teasing a girl on the night of December 31 at Bapu Nagar.

E. Upender and Suresh, natives of Prakasam district had eve-teased a girl between 9.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on New Year’s eve at Bapu Nagar, under the S.R. Nagar police station (PS) limits. They were caught and then booked under the recently initiated E-Petty cases, under which officials use a tablet to process and expedite the case instead of going through the usual paper work.

The case was heard by the 10th Special Metropolitan Magistrate, after which they were handed the three-day sentences. “Thanks to the E-Petty case system, we can now identify repeat offenders as well. Once a person’s name is entered into the tab, his past antecedents, if any, will also show in the tablet,” said S.R. Nagar PS Inspector Md. Waheeduddin.

Mr. Waheeduddin added that the E-Petty case initiative was launched at the PS in October last year, and since then 174 cases have been registered through it. “It is used to book cases along with evidence as well. Before this, there were chances that in petty cases impersonators would appear instead of the accused,” he said.

The two accused were booked under the City Police Act under section 70 (C) for eve-teasing, said Mr. Waheeduddin and added that the E-Petty case initiative had started in other PS limits in Hyderabad much earlier in 2016.
