To place Phanigiri in Suryapet district on the tourist map of Buddhist circuit, the government of Telangana has earmarked ₹ 1.89 crore, according to an official release.

Recently, during the global celebration of Buddhist Heritage of Telangana, many of the monks and delegates visited the spot and evinced keen interest in the site and the relics there.

To tap into this potential, the Telangana government has drawn up ambitious plans to develop the area.

A two-suite guest house, a CC road from the bottom of the hillock to the top and a connecting road from the main road are planned at a cost of ₹ 1.74 crore.

Phanigiri is a prominent Buddhist site on the Suryapet-Janagam Road and has relics dating back to 1st Century AD which were unearthed during excavations in 2001.

The sculptural wealth from the site shows a gradual transition between the Satavahana period and Ikshvaku period.

The artefacts recovered will be housed in Buddhist museum to be curated by the Department of Archaeology and Museums.
