HYDERABAD: Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) has announced that it will observe the month of February as ‘Month of Resistance’ and run a signature campaign across the country seeking people’s support for the demand for justice for Najeeb Ahmed, a student of Jawarharlal Nehru University who has been missing since October 15.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, State president of SIO Laeeq Ahmed Khan cited Najeeb’s disappearance in JNU and Rohith Vemula’s suicide in University of Hyderabad to stress that it is an insidious way to thwart the ascent of marginalised sections into university spaces and higher educational institutions.

Shielding suspects

Close to four months after his disappearance, there is no trace of Najeeb, and though Home Ministry has constituted a special investigation team to probe into it, the enquiry lacks transparency, Mr.Khan charged.

“Investigation is being done in mosques and dargahs. They even went to Badaun for investigation, but interrogation of the suspects was mild,” he said. Though JNU’s Vice-Chancellor was responsible for the safety of Najeeb, he did not lodge a complaint with the police about his disappearance. Instead, he was busy shielding the suspects, Mr. Khan alleged.

Raise issue in Parliament

He demanded that the Telangana government raise this issue in Parliament through its MPs, besides demanding constitution of independent enquiry into the disappearance of the student. They are aiming at collecting eight lakh signatures in the campaign, after which representations will be made to the President and other national heads.

Najeeb Ahmed is a research scholar in the school of Biotechnology, JNU. He was allegedly assaulted by an gang of ABVP cadre on October 14, and approached a hospital for treatment of his wounds. The research scholar has been missing since the next day.
