Telangana Save Education Committee on Monday urged the State government to drop the proposed Private Universities Bill. At a public meeting here, the Committee passed a resolution protesting the government’s support to private universities.
Instead of encouraging formation of private universities, the government can strengthen the infrastructure in 15 government universities by filling up the vacancies, Committee’s organising secretary K. Laxminarayana said. In another resolution, the Committee demanded that semi-residential system be introduced up to eighth standard in all government schools. Already, the government was serving lunch to students through mid-day meal programme. “By serving breakfast in the morning and snacks in the evening and sending the students home after completing homework, these schools can be made semi-residential,” the secretary said.
The meeting also passed resolution urging the government to introduce pre-primary education in all government schools. Speakers at the meeting observed that private schools were admitting children in schools at the age of three years even in rural areas.
“Naturally, less number of students would join government schools. Citing this, the top officials are closing down schools in the guise of rationalisation,” Mr. Laxminarayana contended.
