After a gap of three days, sanitation works in the city resumed on Thursday with the last of the agitating workers’ union, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union calling off the strike.

However, it could take another three to four days for the GHMC to clean up the streets and roads given the accumulated garbage across the city during the last three days of strike by the sweeping and transportation units.

“We shift around 3,500 metric tonnes (MT) of garbage to the dumping yard each day. Since the works have been affected since Monday, there could be around 9,500 MT of garbage piled up in the city,” said the GHMC Additional Commissioner (Health and Sanitation), L. Vandan Kumar.

Along with lifting of daily garbage, clearing accumula-ted material would take a few days, he said, adding that the process would conclude by the weekend. “We will clear gathered garbage and restore the normal sanitation exercise by the weekend.”
