5.46 lakh children administered polio drops

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao launched the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme in the city by administering polio drops to children at his camp office here on Sunday. Deputy Chief Minister T. Rajaiah, Hyderabad District Collector K. Nirmala and GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar were present on the occasion.

The Chief Minister asked GHMC officials to continue the programme on Monday too, so as to cover children who could not be administered the drops on Sunday.

In Hyderabad district, 5.46 lakh children, 93 per cent of the total child population, were vaccinated, said health officials.

A total of 3,200 polio booths were set up and another 85 mobile teams pressed into service across the district.

The civic body had made arrangements to cover more than 5.83 lakh children and a house-to-house activity would be taken up from January 19 to 21 to cover children who missed out on Sunday. The mobile teams were assigned the task of administering polio drops to children at construction sites, temporary settlements, market places, places of worship, public places and railway and bus stations.
