More than 52,000 vehicles are plying on roads in Telangana without registration after expiry of the temporary registration numbers (T/R), though one is expected to get his/her vehicle registered after purchase.
Data sourced from the Road Transport Authority (RTA) showed that there are presently 52,205 unregistered vehicles in TS, which were not registered after April 1. Of the total, 45,763 are two-wheelers, 4,491 tractor trailers, 876 cars and others.
Non-registration of vehicles is in clear violation of RTA rules as a vehicle must be registered within 30 days after purchase. Beyond that, a fine will have to be levied on the driver. Though the percentage of the unregistered vehicles is miniscule compared to the total number of vehicles in the State, which is more than 70 lakh, non-registration can lead to many complications to the owner in case anything untoward happens, said a senior RTA official.
“For example, after the T/R expires 30 days after purchase, in case of an accident, the insurance of the vehicle will be void,” pointed out the senior RTA official. The data from the RTA, which shows the number of unregistered vehicles after 180 days of purchase, will soon help enforcement officers tackle the issue, mentioned the senior official.
“We are planning to work together with police officials as well, and very soon action will be taken against violators,” he said. Another senior official further explained that it is also an important issue for police officers, who can identify a vehicle and its owner easily in case of an accident.
