Case under Excise and Prohibition Act registered against shop owner
Forty persons fell sick after consuming adulterated toddy at R.K. Puram in Neredmet on Monday night.
An hour after consuming the toddy, the persons complained of severe uneasiness, problem in speaking and developed seizures. Worried over their condition, the families rushed them to Gandhi Hospital where they are recuperating, said Neredmet Inspector K. Ramesh.
He said the toddy drinkers aged between 13 and 45 years developed complications on Monday night.
The police and Excise Department officials collected samples from the toddy compound to find out the chemical substances mixed with the drink. A case under the Excise and Prohibition Act was registered against the shop owner Srinivas Goud and others.
The seller Raju was detained immediately after consumers complained of health complications and the shop was also seized. Senior Excise officials, who inspected the shop, ruled out mixing of the chemical chloral hydrate. The samples collected from the shop would be sent for laboratory to ascertain the exact chemicals used in the toddy.
