A 23-year-old woman is battling for life with over 80 per cent burns after four men, including a person known to her, doused her in kerosene and set her ablaze in a railway quarter at Chilakalguda on Wednesday.

The woman went to the abandoned railway quarters after Ishaq, a meat shop worker, invited her for a conversation. “What exactly happened after they met there is yet to be ascertained but the woman said Ishaq and three of his friends started misbehaving and tried to sexually assault her,” the Chilakalguda police said.

As the woman resisted their sexual advances, the accused sprinkled kerosene on her and lighted a matchstick. Engulfed in flames, the woman ran out screaming for help. She was rushed to Gandhi Hospital where doctors said her condition was critical.

Ishaq was picked up late in the night and being interrogated.
