38 persons sentenced to jail for drunken-driving

City courts on Wednesday awarded jail terms to 38 motorists for driving in an intoxicated condition. Of the 38 motorists, 31 were awarded with an imprisonment of three days and the rest were given jail term of one day.

Special drive

The motorists were caught by city police during a special drive conducted during last weekend. A total of 273 motorists were caught during the drive and cases were booked under Section 185 of Motor Vehicle Act according to which a person is considered as being intoxicated if his Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is more than 30 mg per 100 ml blood.

Police caught 200 two-wheeler drivers, 57 four-wheeler drivers, 14 three-wheeler drivers and two heavy vehicle drivers during the two-day enforcement. City police have booked 8,187 cases drink driving cases in this year and 720 motorists have been awarded with imprisonment till date, a press release said.
