As part of a major promise made by the TRS government, all the 119 residential schools (Gurukulas) for backward class students — one for each constituency — will start functioning across Telangana from June 12.
Named after Mahatma Jyotiba Pule, the Telangana government will extend quality education in English medium in these residential schools.
Disclosing this at a media conference here on Thursday, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Jogu Ramanna said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced residential schools to help BCs get quality education and English medium would help the students compete at global level.
As many as 28,520 students would benefit from these schools and each school with 5th, 6th and 7th classes will admit 80 students to each class, with a total school strength of 240 students. In four years’ time, these 119 Gurukula schools would upgrade to junior colleges and the strength of students would increase to 76,000.
The schools would have all basic amenities including computer labs.
Steps were also taken for recruitment to 2,013 teacher posts in these residential schools through Telangana Public Service Commission. Till regular teachers were recruited, retired persons were appointed temporarily as principals and teaching and non-teaching staff were in place, he said.
The BC residential school students registered highest pass percentage in the 10th and Intermediate examinations than schools of other communities, he disclosed.
