The two-day Knowledge Management Summit-2017 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) got under way on Monday, with speakers at the inaugural session urging companies to pay greater attention to knowledge management and the need for industry-academia collaboration.

Cyient founder and former chairman of Nasscom B.V.R. Mohan Reddy said companies need to factor in the rise of social media. Traditionally, the main source of knowledge came from its employees. But this alone is not enough today with the emergence and impact of social media, though the usage and ethics of it may differ, he said.

Improved ability

Underscoring the need for companies to invest sufficiently on knowledge management, Mr. Reddy said one of the benefits would be an improved ability to deliver products and solutions to customers faster.

In his keynote address, Deepak B. Phatak of the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, said there was need for a re-look at the education system in the country and greater interaction between the academia and the industry.

Ganesh Natarajan, chairman of CII National Committee on KM and BT, said the rapid globalisation and technology advancements have brought to the fore the relevance of knowledge management and what it could do to the firm’s growth very clearly.
