A 22-year-old has been arrested for allegedly shooting at a minor kabaddi player on Sunday, the police said on Wednesday.

The 17-year-old player, who was admitted to a hospital, is still undergoing treatment.

Member of gang

Amit alias Kannu, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar, was apprehended from a DDA park in Madangir on Tuesday following a tip-off.

The police said he is an active member of the Gaurav Jhareda gang.

During interrogation, Amit told the police that his associate, who is a juvenile, and he got enraged during an argument over scores of the team they were supporting and the victim’s team.

“He told the police that an argument broke out between the two teams, following which the juvenile and he intervened and started abusing the teenager and his team. When the victim raised his voice, Amit’s associate shot at him. One shot hit the player in the head, even as the duo fled after firing three shots in the air,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (south-east) Romil Baaniya.

Country-made pistol

The police claim to have recovered two live cartridges and a country-made pistol, later found to be the weapon used in commission of the crime.

“We are looking for the juvenile and further investigation in underway,” said Mr. Baaniya.
