A 24-year-old married woman sustained severe injuries after an acid attack, allegedly by a neighbour whose sexual advances she resisted, in Uttam Nagar here last week.
The accused, identified as Israr, is of the same age as the victim and had assaulted her several times in the past.
“In the past several months, Israar constantly stalked her and tried to woo her. The distressed woman told her husband about it who took up the matter with Israr’s elder brother. However, Israar continued to trouble her,” said a police officer.
The officer said that on Friday when the victim’s husband was not present at home, Israar visited her house and started molesting her. “As she resisted, he went inside his shop, brought acid and threw it on her and fled the spot,” he said.
The victim was taken to a nearby private hospital with the help of neighbours who informed her husband. She was later shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for further treatment .
Israr who had been hiding at his relative’s house was arrested subsequently, said the police. During interrogation, the accused purportedly told the police that he took this step after his efforts to woo the girl failed.
