The body of a 50-year-old woman was found stuffed in a bed box at her house in Vikaspuri here on Sunday. The motive behind the murder is not clear yet but the victim is suspected to have been murdered by her son. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Somitra Devi, who lived with her husband and two adult sons. The victim worked as a maid while her husband Hari Mandal had been working odd jobs at various political rallies in Delhi.

A senior police officer said the woman’s son Bablu had called them around 4 p.m. informing that his mother’s body was found inside the box made in a double bed.

The police have sent the body for post-mortem. The family members, in their statements, maintained that Somitra had gone to sleep at her usual time.

“The victim’s other son has gone missing from the house since Sunday morning and her body was found with strangulation marks on the neck. Bablu claims the family could find neither his mother nor his brother in the house on Sunday morning. They searched a lot and were about to approach the police when they sensed a foul smell emanating from the bed,” said a senior police officer.

When the bed box was opened, they found the body inside. Though her clothes appear to be intact, there was a dupatta around her neck and strangulation marks. No injury marks were found on other parts of the body.

“The victim’s son is the primary suspect as he has been missing since Sunday morning. But we are also looking at the possibility of the involvement of other family members and searching for the missing son,” said the officer.
