A 27-year-old married woman from Mathura succumbed to serious burn injuries on Saturday at Safdarjung hospital, where she was undergoing treatment. The Delhi Police have filed a zero first information report based on complaints forwarded by the Delhi Commission for Women.

The victim’s family brought her to Delhi two days ago in a serious condition. Doctors at Safdarjung hospital have said that the victim had suffered around 90% burns and that she was in an unstable condition at the time of admission to the hospital. The victim's family members have alleged that she was tortured by her in-laws and asked the DCW to intervene. The DCW then sent a team, including a counsellor, to the hospital to help the woman recover.

‘Statement under duress’

The victim's had initially said that she suffered the injuries while cooking. However, her family members alleged that the statement was provided under duress from her in-laws.

The DCW contacted the sub-divisional magistrate of the area, who recorded the victim's revised statement at the hospital, on Friday. In her revised statement, she alleged that her in-laws had attempted to take her life by pouring petrol over her. However, she succumbed to injuries a day later. The FIR lodged at the Safdarjung Enclave police station has been forwarded to the Mathura Police as well.

DCW chairperson, Swati Maliwal has demanded immediate action in the issue. “It is a very shameful incident and the Mathura Police should immediately take action against the accused,” said Ms. Maliwal.
