A 27-year-old woman was shot dead and her father seriously injured allegedly by the woman’s estranged husband at the Karkardooma Metro Station here on Tuesday. The suspect fled after the incident.

The shooting took place when Deepti and her 58-year-old father Bhisham Das were climbing the stairs to the elevated Metro station around noon.

“The Central Industrial Security Force personnel who were deployed on the second floor heard the gunshots and rushed downstairs,” said an official.

The gunshots were fired at a public place and created terror in the area.

While the passers-by ran looking for cover, security personnel reached the spot and found Deepti and her father lying in an injured state.

“They were rushed to the nearby Deepak Memorial Hospital,” said the official.

While being removed to the hospital, Deepti's father alleged that he and his daughter were shot at from behind by her husband Pawan (30).

Preliminary police investigations suggested that Mr. Das sustained bullet injuries in the chest, hand and leg. A bullet pierced Deepti’s waist, suggesting that she was shot at from a close range.

The police found several empties at the scene of crime. “It appears that the shots were fired from a double barrel gun of 12 bore,” said the officer.

Enquiries by the police revealed that there was an ongoing matrimonial discord between Deepti and Pawan who were married in 2007.

Relations between the two, who have two daughters--the eldest being four-and-a-half years old--turned sour a couple of years later, but through mediation the issue was resolved and they again started living together amicably.

About two years ago, they again fell out and the matter was brought before the Crime Against Women Cell.

Since Deepti had started living with her father in Chirag Delhi, her husband moved the court seeking a reunion with her.

The case was also referred to the mediation cell.

On Tuesday, it is learnt that Deepti and her father had gone to attend a hearing and were on their way when they were shot at the Metro station. Suspecting Pawan’s role in the crime, the police have launched a hunt for him.

The police have seized a red colour Alto car which they suspect was used by Pawan and later abandoned.

A little distance from the spot, they also recovered a rifle and an ammunition belt with some live cartridges suspected to have been used by the accused.
