The Delhi Police Special Cell on Sunday claimed to have arrested a woman who has allegedly been involved in supplying arms manufactured in Madhya Pradesh to the Capital and adjoining areas for the past decade and a half.
Sophisticated pistols
Mobai (45) was arrested on July 26. A consignment of 14 pistols, locally manufactured but marked ‘Made in England’ and ‘Made in USA’, was seized from her, said the police. The weapons are 7.65 mm semi-automatic sophisticated pistols with 14 spare magazines.
The police said she has been arrested and bailed out several times in the past.
Proclaimed offender
The police are now considering slapping the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on Mobai, who is a proclaimed offender in a few Arms Act cases.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P.S. Kushwah said they had a tip-off that she would come near Red Light Shastri Park, Eastern approach Road, between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to deliver a huge cache of semi-automatic weapons.
Overpowered
“A trap was laid by Inspector Satendra Mohan and team. They spotted her coming from the Shastri Park red light side. She had a bag on the right shoulder and stood waiting for someone. She was about to leave when no one turned up for a while, but was overpowered and apprehended,” said Mr. Kushwah.
The police said that she used to work as an agricultural labourer but the income was not enough to sustain a family of seven. Since she is from Dhar, a hotbed of illegal arms manufacturing in Madhya Pradesh, she had came in contact with a smuggler who roped her into the trade.
Used different routes
It is alleged that Mobai would always take different routes from Indore to Delhi. She would alternatively use the MP-Rajasthan-Delhi and MP-UP-Delhi routes to keep the police guessing. She would also alight a few stops before her destination to evade arrest. Also, she did not attract much suspicion as few women are involved in the trade.
