Woman attempts suicide after tiff with husband over karva chauth fast

A 39-year-old woman in Kalyanpuri allegedly tried to commit suicide on Tuesday by consuming phenyl after being purportedly snubbed by her husband for not keeping a fast on the occasion of karva chauth .

The victim Mahesh Kumari lives with her husband Vijay and four children. They got married in 1991.

According to the police, on Sunday, the couple had an argument over some issue after which Mahesh told her husband that she would not fast on the occasion of karva chauth on Tuesday.

Around 11-30 a.m. on Tuesday, when Vijay discovered that his wife was not fasting, he got into another fight with her.

In a fit of rage, Mahesh went to the washroom, picked up a bottle of phenyl kept there and consumed it.

Vijay then rushed her to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. The police were also informed.

Police statement

In her statement to the police, the victim is learnt to have said that Vijay did not force her to consume phenyl.

A case has been registered against Vijay under Section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the Indian Penal Code.
