Delhi State Communist Party of India activists staged a dharna near the police headquarters at ITO here on Monday protesting against the steep hike in power tariffs recently announced by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Addressing the dharna, CPI (National Council) Secretary Amarjeet Kaur criticised the Delhi Government for the hike and said despite electricity thefts being brought down considerably, the benefits had not been passed on to the people. “In spite of a memorandum of understanding to this effect between the Government and the discoms, where did all the money go?”

Also, Ms. Kaur pointed out, the discoms have been using the infrastructure built by the erstwhile Delhi Electricity Supply Undertaking. “Are these companies only meant to make profits?” she said, demanding the “unjustified hike” be withdrawn and that the Comptroller and Auditor General audit the account of these companies.
