Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday promised to abolish the contractual system in certain professions such as sanitation and security services.

Addressing citizens, Mr. Kejriwal urged contractors in the Capital to provide minimum wages to labourers.

“We will abolish the contractual system in areas that require regular employment throughout the year. However, we will not change this system in areas of temporary employment,” Mr. Kejriwal said.

Plea for support

Mr. Kejriwal also requested the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress to “desist from politicking over the issue” even as he urged Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal not to create “hurdles” in abolishing what he termed was an “exploitative” system.

“Under the contractual system, workers are harassed. I will request both the BJP and the Congress to support us and not to do politics over this issue,” he said.
