The historic Connaught Place, which is the financial and shopping hub of the Capital, will soon become a Wi-Fi zone starting first week of July.
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has partnered with telecom service provider Tata Docomo to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in the area that will enable seamless Internet connectivity.
Once deployed, the Wi-Fi hotspot will cover more than 4 sq km, ensuring connectivity in the Inner and Outer Circles, which are thronged by scores of youngsters and professionals alike for either business or leisure.
While the service will be free for the first 20 minutes of use at most of the hotspots, customers wanting to continue with the use of Wi-Fi will need to either buy a plan online or purchase scratch cards from counters.
Tata Docomo Wi-Fi provides pre-paid tariff cards starting from Rs.20 for 40 minutes, Rs.30 for 60 minutes and Rs.50 for 100 minutes.
Speaking about the new service, NDMC chairman Jalaj Shrivastava said: “Connecting one of the most vibrant and busy parts of the city with the world through the Internet round the clock is a milestone in the process of the city’s urban development.”
He added that facilities such as Wi-Fi connectivity across CP showcase the futuristic path the NDMC has taken to bring the city at par with international standards.
Once the headquarters for the British, CP today is one of the most vibrant business districts of Delhi. CP, as Connaught Place is popularly known, has also been rated as one of the most expensive business destinations in the world by global property consultant CBRE Group.
Tata Docomo chief operating officer, WiFi Business, Avinash Gabriel said: “With these services we are targeting business and non-business visitors who increasingly need connectivity with higher speeds across multiple devices.”
Tata Docomo already provides such facilities in other public areas such as Delhi Domestic and T3 International Airport and Feroz Shah Kotla Cricket Stadium.
