The bodies of the 57-year-old joint secretary and his wife, who were found dead at his official residence in Kaka Nagar in New Delhi on Friday, were handed over to their relatives after post-mortem on Saturday. Preliminary findings have indicated that the government official was murdered and his wife allegedly committed suicide.
The police suspect that Vijay Kumar, who was posted as Advisor (Costing) in the Food Processing department, was murdered by his 50-year-old wife Sita while he was sleeping. She then allegedly hanged herself. However, investigations are on to ascertain various possibilities.
Inquiries by the police have revealed that the couple had a longstanding strained relationship. They are trying to ascertain whether Sita was undergoing treatment for some mental illness. Her daughter Varanya has reportedly told the police that she would be suspicious of her phone calls being tapped. The family had, therefore, installed a jammer devise inside the house.
Reconstructing the sequence of events, the police have found out that on Thursday, Varanya’s male friend from Mumbai had come to meet her. The two then left for a resort in Rajasthan. The last time she talked to her mother was around 12-30 a.m. on Friday. Varanya later tried to contact her, but she did not pick up the phone. The police suspect that the incident took place in the early hours of Friday.
The next morning, Mr. Kumar’s driver rang the doorbell several times. When he did not get any response from inside for long, he called up Varanya. She returned around 4-30 p.m. and realising that something was amiss, called in the police.
A 1983-batch Indian Cost Accounts Service official, Mr. Kumar had married Sita in 1988. She was presently working with a bank in South Delhi.
