A 64-year-old man was arrested from Mumbai last week for allegedly sexually assaulting his five-year-old granddaughter. His wife was also arrested on charges of abetting the crime.

The duo were produced before a court on Thursday and sent to judicial custody.

Booked under POCSO Act

The aged couple has been booked under Sections 6 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) Act and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code at the Women’s Police Station in Gurugram.

The girl stays with her parents in Sector 59 here.

According to the police, the first instance of sexual assault took place in March when the couple, who live in Jamshedpur, came to visit the family during Holi. After they left, the girl kept complaining of pain in her private parts.

Issue went undiagnosed

Though she was taken to doctors, nothing was diagnosed. During the summer vacations in May, the girl’s parents took her to her grandparents’ house along with her brother, when the sexagenarian allegedly molested her again on more than one occasion. On returning home, the girl complained of pain again.

The doctors, meanwhile, told the mother that they suspected an infection.

Girl confided in mother

However, the girl eventually confided in her mother and told her that her grandfather had touched her private parts during their visit to Jamshedpur.

The girl also told her mother that her grandmother had threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident. At this, the girl's mother approached the police on June 28 and a case was registered against the couple.

A team was sent to Jamshedpur to arrest the accused, but the couple reportedly escaped to Mumbai. They were eventually arrested on June 28.
