A whistleblower who had conducted many sting operations on policemen in the Capital was attacked on Friday night outside his house by some persons.

Chetan Prakash Sharma was shot at in Rajapuri between 10:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. when he was walking his dog. Mr. Sharma suffered bullet injuries on the hand. Jackie, a German Shepherd, jumped on the attackers who were on a bike and died of bullet wounds on the spot.

A call was made to the PCR by the locals around 11 p.m. after which Mr. Sharma was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Talking to The Hindu over phone, Mr. Sharma said, “I was walking my dog after dinner when I noticed two men on a bike coming towards me. I stood aside, so that my dog wouldn’t jump on the bike, but the bikers came close and the pillion rider started firing at me. Just when the firing started my dog jumped on the bikers. I was hit by a bullet on my hand while the dog was shot at many times. I was later told that he died on the spot.” The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons and have taken up investigation.

In his statement to the police, Mr. Sharma has named a few people whom he suspects could be behind the attack.

“The victim has given us names of some people and we are investigating them. We are also taking help from the footage of a closed circuit television camera installed near the incident spot,” a police officer said.

According to Mr. Sharma, some local leaders and the councillor of Madhu Vihar had been wrongly using his name for extorting money from policemen in the name of sting operations.

The police are verifying the charges.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited him on Saturday morning and assured him of cooperation.

Mr. Sharma, who has also helped the Anti-Corruption Branch in identifying many corrupt policemen through his sting operations, has been in the job for the last 10 years.
