January 13, 2011 02:32 am | Updated October 13, 2016 07:04 pm IST - NEW DELHI

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Brinda Karat, who visited the site of the demolished religious structure at Nizamuddin here on Wednesday, faulted the police action against protesters.

Ms. Karat, who met area MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah in the evening, said: “Whatever happened is absolutely wrong. People were simply going to offer prayers.”

The Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid and Congress MP Parvez Hasmi also visited the area.

Meanwhile, a Delhi Development Authority spokesperson said it tried to demolish the structure four times last year but could not do so because of inadequate police force.

CM reviews situation

PTI reports:

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit reviewed the situation at Nizamuddin.

In a late night meeting, attended by several top officials, Ms. Dikshit said the officials should visit the spot and ensure that law and order situation did not go out of hand. All efforts should be taken so that peace prevailed, she told them.

Sources said the government might approach the court to allow people to offer prayers at the open space.
