Students and parents apprehensive about “ragging” during the first few days of college in Delhi University can rest easy as the University has come up with a slew of water-tight measures to prevent this menace.
No outsiders will be allowed into colleges, and institutions will have to display prominently rules regarding ragging while also forming an anti-ragging squad to monitor whether any ragging is taking place. There will be police personnel in plainclothes inside and outside colleges.
Delhi University Registrar Alka Sharma said: “Suspension or expulsion or cancellation of degree is the punishment for ragging. Students have already submitted an affidavit at the time of admission stating that they will be liable for one of these things if caught ragging another student.”
There will be police pickets outside every college with special assistance being provided to women’s colleges. Although preventive or punitive measures will be taken by the Principals, defacing of walls outside colleges by political parties will warrant direct action by the police, if necessary. Police assistance will also be sought against raggers if the college authorities feel the need for it.
Regular surprise visits will be carried out at hostels and even eating joints will be kept under vigil, while electronic surveillance will be carried out at “sensitive areas.” The police will also monitor traffic and can barricade any part of the university campus. Students have been advised to use public transport since nobody can be responsible for traffic outside colleges.
There will also be mobile patrolling, where police vehicles will move around the place to take speedy action in case of any untoward incidents. The University has set-up two joint control rooms — North campus can be reached at 27667221 and South campus at 24119832. The control rooms will be operating from Tuesday, a day before college opens officially.
Ways to report ragging
There are also other ways to report ragging. A written complaint can be dropped at the college.
A student can call the national anti-ragging helpline around the clock at 1800-180-5522 or the nearest Police Control Room van by dialling 100.
