The city marked the World Heritage Day with a host of activities. While Delhi Metro took its officers on a heritage walk between Chawri Bazar and Chandni Chowk, the Delhi Tourism Department, in association with the Delhi Heritage Management Secretariat, took its staff for a walk around Purana Quila. The Tourism Department also organised an informative heritage quiz, Sawaal Dilli Ka, at Dilli Haat, INA, in the evening.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) launched The Metro Adventure Club (MAC), an initiative to promote adventure and sports activities among its employees. The heritage walk organised by MAC along with ‘DelhiWalks’, which conducts walks to various heritage locations in the Capital, covered several locations of historical importance such as Jama Masjid, Red Fort, Gauri Shankar Mandir, Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib and the famous Paranthe Wali Gali in Old Delhi. More than 50 people participated in the event.
“An absorbing walk was chosen as an apt way to showcase the facets of the city’s historical attributes. It served as medium of expressing the indigenous character of the Walled City in tandem with its contemporary global identity,” a senior transport department official said.
“The initiative is to spread awareness about the rich heritage of the Capital. Besides, heritage walks promote a healthy habit of walking to stay fit. We will continue similar events and we are soon going to start these walks across the Capital. Further, heritage walks will also be popularized amongst school children and we’re planning to offer them various facilities along with subsidies,” Delhi Tourism Minister Mr. Jitender Singh Tomar said.
