On Sunday, the North Delhi Mayor visited the house of 32-year-old Ravinder, a resident of Kishore Market, to listen to Prime Minister’s Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat on the radio.
An e-rickshaw driver, Ravinder was beaten to death last month for objecting to some men urinating in public. He had been attacked with iron knuckles and stones wrapped in towels near gate no. 4 of north Delhi’s GTB Nagar metro station.

Mayor Preety Agarwal was joined by other Kishore Market residents and BJP’s Leader of the House for the North body Jayendra Dabas, and area councillor Raja Iqbal Singh. “The residents were asked to pledge not to litter their surroundings and to use dustbins to throw trash,” said Ms. Agarwal.
Job for his wife
The Mayor also offered Ravinder’s wife Rani, who is pregnant, a post in the civic body.
Calling Ravinder ‘no less than a martyr’, Ms. Agarwal also gave him the unofficial title of ‘ swachhta ka sipahi’ [soldier of sanitation].
“It is nice that the municipality has noticed Ravinder’s sacrifice. We were privileged to have Mayor madam in our house,” said Manoj, one of Ravinder’s relatives.
